Announcing Our 106th Season

Alt Text

Vagabond Players is excited to announce that the best of Broadway will be back on Broadway starting in January 2022 with a lineup worth waiting for.

THE CLEAN HOUSE
January 7-30, 2022

Written by Sarah Ruhl
Directed by Rina Steinhauer / Assistant Directed by Penelope Chan

Lane’s maid, Mathilde, doesn’t want to clean. She wants to be a stand-up comedian. All Lane wants is a clean house—and a husband who doesn’t cheat on her. Sarah Ruhl’s wryly funny and deeply moving comedy joyously demonstrates that the best things in life—a sublime joke, a fulfilling purpose, a soul mate—are infinitely worth waiting for.

“…one of the finest and funniest new plays you’re likely to see this season.” - The New York Times

GOD OF CARNAGE
February 18 – March 13, 2022

Written by Yazmina Reza, translated by Christopher Hampton
Directed by Stephen Deininger

A comedy of manners…without the manners, Reza’s Tony Award-winning Broadway sensation offers up the guilty pleasure of watching a pair of upper middle-class marriages go boom. The playground altercation between two eleven-year-olds brings together four parents who think they can resolve things in a civilized, adult manner. BUT, as the evening progresses, and the drinks flow, the gloves come off and pure animal instinct reigns supreme.

“Bitingly funny! Reza’s clever, stinging view of contemporary culture makes for a bracing burst of theater.” - The Baltimore Sun

DISGRACED
April 1-24, 2022

Written by Ayad Akhtar
Directed by Matthew Sean Mitchell

A successful Pakistani-American lawyer has turned his back on his culture and heritage in pursuit of the American Dream – living a life of luxury with a beautiful Caucasian wife and a lucrative promotion within his grasp. Ayad Ahktar’s Pulitzer Prize-winning drama shows how Amir’s world rapidly implodes at a dinner party with his African-American co-worker and her Jewish husband that shatters relationships and everyone’s beliefs about race and religious identity.

“…a blistering social drama about the racial prejudices that secretly persist in social circles…Ahktar knows how to build a scene and maintain suspense.” - Variety

THE FANTASTICKS
May 20 – June 19, 2022

Music by Harvey Schmidt, Book and Lyrics by Tom Jones
Directed by Jimi Kinstle

There’s always time to remember this legendary romance about a boy, a girl, their two fathers, and a love that transcends all boundaries and expectations. Filled with one of the finest scores ever written for the stage, this bewitching comedy and haunting love story has entranced generations of theatergoers, and will be sure to enchant and captivate Vagabond Players’ audiences for a long time to come.

“From ‘Try to Remember,’ the show’s best-known tune, to ‘Soon It’s Gonna Rain,’ to the haunting ‘They Were You,’ the songs are reminders of what make this little musical so hypnotic.” - Associated Press

Thanks to the ongoing support of our patrons and organizations like the Maryland State Arts Council, we’re eager to reopen the doors and welcome everyone back to the stage. More information will be available soon about auditions and opportunities to get involved, as well as tickets and subscriptions for this season.

Pandemic Players

Vagabond Players is excited to support the efforts of Pandemic Players:

While theaters are closed, Pandemic Players will be producing streamed productions, free to the public, to fill a need for live theater. We will do so free of charge, and will collect donations, 100% to support local theatres affected by the shutdown.

Join us in supporting the efforts of Baltimore’s theatre community as they strive to offer artists an outlet and audience members an escape in this time of uncertainty. To learn more, visit Pandemic Players on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/Pandemic-Players-110668513891671/.

Update on COVID-19 Closing

The health and safety of our Vagabond Players family continues to be our number one priority. Following the recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention limiting gatherings to 50 people, we have suspended all rehearsals and performances until further notice.

Unfortunately, this means the cancellation of our upcoming production of The Fantasticks. We want to thank the director, creative team and actors who had already started to build what promised to be a wonderful production.

We are extending our exchange policy to allow current ticket holders to exchange tickets for a future performance when they become available for sale. Patrons can also request a full refund or to have their ticket purchase changed into a tax-deductible donation. During this time of uncertainty, the continued support of our patrons is crucial to helping us and our creative community prepare to reopen our doors when it is safe to do so. Patrons can contact our box office team at boxoffice@vagabondplayers.org or by leaving a message at 410-563-9135.

We wish good health and safety to all, and look forward to welcoming you back to theatre.

COVID-19 Update

Out of an abundance of caution for our patrons, cast and crew members, we have made the difficult decision to suspend all performances at this time. We are grateful your continued support as we migrate through the current situation.

We will be offering current ticket holders exchanges for future performances or refunds and appreciate your patience as our team reaches out to our patrons. You may also contact our box office team at boxoffice@vagabondplayers.org or leave a message at 410-563-9135.

Our team will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as available.

A Note from the Board of Directors

The safety of our patrons, actors and crew members is always at the top of our priority list. With that in mind, we wanted to let you know what precautions we’re taking to address the current COVID-19 (Coronavirus) situation and maintain a safe and welcoming environment:

  • Increased cleaning and sanitizing of all surfaces, including door handles, armrests, and bathrooms
  • In addition to our stock of hand soap and paper towels, extra hand sanitizer is available to all patrons
  • Our team will continue monitoring local and national healthcare organizations for more information and protocols

Patrons who feel unwell are encouraged to take advantage of our free exchange policy. Tickets can be exchanged online for a different performance of the same show up until showtime of the ticketed performance. If you need assistance, please contact our box office team at boxoffice@vagabondplayers.org.

Due to the current circumstances, we are also expanding our exchange policy – if you are unable to exchange for the same show, we will help you exchange your tickets for any other performance during our current season. Please contact our box office team at boxoffice@vagabondplayers.org to exchange for a different show.

Thank you for your continued support,
The Vagabond Players Board of Directors

#GivingTuesday - Support the Students of Fell’s Point

Alt Text

do·nate

/ˈdōˌnāt/
(verb) to give for a good cause, for example money or goods to a charity

As part of our #GivingTuesday effort this year, Vagabond Players wants to give back to the community we have called home for over 50 years. Our current production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee inspired us to host a school supply drive to benefit Fells Point’s own Wolfe Street Academy.

Wolfe Street Academy is a PK, K-5 Baltimore City Public School with Conversion Charter Status. This means Wolfe Street was previously a traditional public school that sought the responsibility and right to take on the greater independence of charter status. Unlike other charters that fill all seats by lottery, Conversion Charters maintain the enrollment zone that they previously served as a traditional school, serving all students in their zone regardless of lottery timelines. The school serves students and their families in the Upper Fells Point neighborhood.

With the holiday season fast approaching, please help us support the students and teachers in our community. All new school supplies are welcome and appreciated. Want to help but not sure what to give, Wolfe Street Academy has provided the below list of most needed supplies:

  • Kids scissors (blunt or rounded tip)
  • Pencils (regular, not mechanical)
  • Pens – black & blue
  • Glue sticks
  • Dry erase markers (low odor)
  • Composition books (primary journal K-2, wide ruled)
  • Spiral notebooks (wide ruled)
  • Sharpie permanent markers
  • Crayons
  • Pink pearl erasers
  • Two pocket folders

Donations can be dropped off at our box office (806 S. Broadway, Baltimore, MD 21231) during any of our performances of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee running through November 17 - check out the show page for performance dates and times.

No time to go to the store? We’ve made it simple to give with an Amazon Wishlist - Just add the items you’d like to donate to your cart and place your order. Your donation will deliver directly to our team and be added to the items we give to Wolfe Street Academy on #GivingTuesday (December 3).

Simone Ellin, associate editor, takes a look at our 100+ year long history:

“Keeping the lights on in a community theater is no easy feat. It takes talented actors, directors and designers willing to work for nothing or next to nothing; a cadre of dependable donors; a venue in which to stage performances; and, of course, theater-loving audiences to buy tickets and fill seats.

It’s something Vagabond Players has been doing for the past 103 years…”
